  An Intern's Journal: Part I

It has been a week since I started my first client assignment at KPMG and I have had an amazing experience.

I was so nervous before coming in on my first day. I didn’t know if the associate and senior associate on the team would just start giving me assignments that I had no idea how to do, or if they would just completely ignore me.

After arriving early at my client site, I realized I had nothing to worry about. My experience with KPMG had already taught me that the people in the firm were always welcoming. Besides, my senior had e-mailed me instructions on what to do once I got to the client site. The associate and my senior were really nice and supportive. They are just a couple of years older than the interns, and they truly understand our situations. They gave me an overview of the company, asked what I had learned at training, and also kept it casual by asking me what I do for fun.

Plenty of Feedback

Since my first day on assignment, I was given tasks that are challenging but at the same time appropriate for the level of knowledge I had acquired through accounting classes and intern training. My senior and associate explained to me what I needed to do and their expectations for my performance. This made me feel a lot more at ease. I felt comfortable enough to ask my teammates questions, and I also felt like I was contributing to an important part of the audit. I found myself asking all sorts of questions, not only about my specific assignments, but also about how to properly enter expenses into the timesheet, and even about their favorite spots in the city.

Lunch was always fun and relaxed, and it was a chance for all of us to get to know each other better. Throughout the week I received new assignments. One thing I really liked about the team’s dynamic is that my senior and associate gave feedback after each task. This allowed me to assess how I was doing, what I was doing well, and what I needed to improve all along the way.

By the time my internship ends, I'm sure I will have learned much more about KPMG, its audit methodology, and about myself and the way I perform on the job. Next week I’m going to Milan to do KPMG’s Global Internship Program. I’m excited for the next weeks, and I’m sure my experience abroad will meet the expectations already set by the first few weeks of the internship. I’ll keep you updated from Italy.

Thank you,

You are actually missing out the most important part of the internship. How are you coping up with the Audit Methodology and the Audit Approach of KPMG? Do you find your self suiting the working culture of the firm and do you believe as per your experience to-date, you will successfully fit in the firm's structures?

Thank you for developing a feedback platform, it will push you far. Consulting leads to success in the audit profession.

Good luck,

Dennis

I expected this article to tell me something about what she DID as an audit trainee. It totally fails. Instead, it reads like a PR piece from inside the KPMG. Even at that, it only reflects on how she got along with her team, without giving any indication of what others might expect.
